Become a part of something bigger
Incarceration shouldn’t mean the end of education. For thousands of Mississippians, a book is a lifeline to mental health, literacy, and a second chance.
Since 2015, Big House Books has answered over 28,000 requests for books, proving that a single book can change a life.
Big House Books is a non-profit, volunteer organization that sends free books by request to prisoners in Mississippi correctional facilities in order to promote literacy and be a vehicle of change for prison reform.

Volunteer
Powered entirely by volunteers, we bridge the gap between "book deserts" in prisons and the right to read for all. In 2025 alone, we put over 20,000 books into the hands of more than 6,000 incarcerated readers across the state.
Whether you donate funds for postage or pack books with us on a Sunday, you are directly fueling literacy and hope behind bars.
Resources for Families and Facilities
Big House Books provides free books to people incarcerated across Mississippi. We are an MDOC-approved book distributor serving individual inmate requests and supplying correctional facility libraries at no cost.
Incarcerated individuals can request books by mail, and chaplains or wardens may request bulk shipments for facility libraries. Families can help by sharing our mailing address and request guidelines. Our goal is simple: increase access to books and learning behind the walls.
How it works
01
You give.
Your donations fund the $3,500+ monthly postage needed to ship these packages.
02
We pack.
Volunteers meet every Sunday in Jackson to hand-pick books based on reader requests.
03
They read.
A book arrives in a cell, offering hope, knowledge, and a connection to the outside world.
